Consultation - Hall Accessibility
Our parish hall has recently hosted more elderly people with impaired abilities. We want to upgrade the facilities so that we can more easily accommodate wheelchairs and people with restricted mobility and sight. The present toilets are functional but not very easily accessible by wheelchair users or those that need assistance. We want to improve the access to the toilets so that they are available to every one of all ages. This requires some minor structural work but the complete re plumbing of the facilities. It requires new access equipment such as rails and grab handles. We also want to fit hand dryers and automatic taps to improve hygiene.
The carpark also needs improvement as it is presently a gravel finish in which wheelchairs sink and cannot be moved. There are door thresholds that need improving as they pose a hazard to those with poor sight and impaired ability as well as handles in strategic places to help stability.
The external lighting needs to be upgraded as some users find it difficult to see in the dark.
Once the work has been carried out, redecoration of certain areas will be required as well as some alterations to the electrical system. Baby changing facilities will be provided and the toilet facilities will cater for all ages and gender.
When the alterations are complete we will publicise the new arrangements to encourage those that felt excluded because of the lack of facilities, to come and attend functions and activities at the hall.
We estimate the cost of the upgrade works to be in the region of £23,000. We have applied for a grant from ‘Awards for All’ for £19,999. The rest of the money will come from our own funds or local fund raising.
